Mobile devices

Next year, more than 1 billion mobile phones and nearly 100 million personal digital assistants (PDAs) will be in users’ hands. By 2003, more users will be able to connect to the Internet through cell phones than through personal computers. This profusion of connected mobile devices poses the largest opportunity for users to access information on the go. The challenge is harnessing the untapped potential.

To date, most devices are at best capable of browsing a small number of Web sites that have been hand-authored to target a specific device. To achieve their potential, mobile devices must expand beyond that, combining the convenience of mobility with the power of desktop computers. But the complexity of application development for mobile devices — which can vary in display size, available RAM, input types and more — has made it hard for these devices to access and aggregate information from public and private sources. These devices often are limited to rudimentary developer tools and inadequate APIs, and too little of developers’ efforts capitalize on the tools and knowledge they have gained after years of developing for more traditional platforms such as servers and desktops. As a result, the application’s time to market increases and developer productivity decreases.

RDS v5i (ERP on Web) are developed in XML thecnology for mobile devices.
